Material Information

Our Palenque sterling silver and gold jewellery is handcrafted to a very high standard of which we are very proud.
We are therefore keen to pass on all relevant information to our customers in order that you can care for and maintain the finish and overall effect of your chosen piece. This should ensure that you enjoy wearing your jewellery for many years to come.

The following information gives helpful tips on the care of each collection on offer.

Sterling Silver Jewellery

Palenque silver items have a Mexican hallmark 925. This means that 92.5% is silver, and this percentage classifies it as Sterling. Any product weighing over 7.78 grams will also be hallmarked in this country.

Care of sterling silver jewellery

Polished Sterling Silver Jewellery

Due to the nature and softness of the metal, sterling silver pieces that have a highly polished finish are prone to fine scratches as a result of normal wear. This can be kept to a minimum with careful wear and regular polishing with cream silver cleaner (e.g. Peak). It is possible to remove more stubborn scratches with a professional polish, which can be done by a reputable silversmith.

Sterling silver is nickel free and is suitable for people who are sensitive to metals. Care must be taken not to expose the silver to perfumes, toiletries, household cleaning fluids and perspiration; these may cause the silver to tarnish. If tarnishing does occur the item should be polished with a cream cleaner or dipped in a silver cleaning solution. These can be bought in supermarkets or department stores. All traces of cleaning solution must be rinsed from the item before it is worn again.

Matt Sterling Silver Jewellery

Sterling Silver jewellery with the matt finish must not be polished in the normal way. A slightly abrasive surface such as a scourer should be used to revitalise the effect. Gently brush the silver in one direction with the scourer to achieve the best results.

To remove any stubborn tarnishing on matt silver please use foam silver cleaner and apply with a sponge. Again these can be bought at most supermarkets or large department stores. The cleaning solution must be rinsed from the product before it is worn again.

Frosted Sterling Silver Jewellery
Cream cleaner and silver dip must not be used on this surface. A mild soapy detergent and soft brush are ideal for maintaining the effect of this finish. Clean the item gently and with care.

Oxidised Sterling Silver Jewellery

This must not be cleaned with a silver cream cleaner or dipped. It will lose its darker finish if it comes into contact with harsh chemicals, resulting in a polished finish.

Sterling Silver with Gold Jewellery

The silver with gold range has pieces with either 14ct gold or a 22ct gold detail and have the sterling hallmark. The Kauffman designer range includes beautifully crafted designs in 18ct gold. The items must be cleaned gently and with care using a soft gold cleaner cloth.

Hand Blown Glass Jewellery

Our Dalila range consists hand-blown glass mounted in silver. Each piece is unique with different variations of colour and air bubbles. Colours range form pale turquoise blue, green, purple and bright blue. The earrings and pendants in this range cannot be mass-produced as each piece of glass has a unique shape, hence each silver mount must be crafted to fit every individual piece.

Pearl Jewellery

The pearls used in our designs are cultured fresh/ sweet water pearls. All cultured pearls, whether fresh or salt water, are not imitation. Pearls are formed by sea molluscs, fresh water mussels and more rarely by snails. The colour of the pearl depends on the type of mollusc and the water. Our Mexican pearls include some white, grey and pink pearls. Extreme dryness and humidity are detrimental to pearls. All pearls are sensitive to acids, perspiration, cosmetics and hairsprays.

Enamel Jewellery
Our enamel jewellery has a purer silver at 98% due to the enameling process it undergoes. As you can appreciate, due to the handmade nature of this jewellery no two pieces are ever the same.

Cubic Zirconia Jewellery
A cubic zirconia is a man-made gemstone, which has the appearance of a diamond. They can be coloured/ dyed to resemble other gemstones. Cubic zirconias are durable but they do not have the life expectancy of a diamond. If the gemstones need cleaning they should be cleaned gently with mild soapy detergent and a soft brush.

Crystal Jewellery

We have a range of stud earrings, which are made from Austrian crystal. These come in the shape of cubes, stars or hearts. We also have a selection of jewellery with silver and Swarovski crystal. If the crystal needs cleaning they should be cleaned gently with mild soapy detergent and a soft brush.

Semi-Precious Stone Jewellery

More of our jewellery contains semi-precious stones such as turquoise, amethyst, garnet, sodalite and onyx. Care must be taken not to bring these into contact with perfumes, hairsprays, toiletries or any harsh cleaning fluids. Use a soft cloth or a very soft brush to clean any stones that may require cleaning.
